Children will be able to take part in some special activities to coincide with a new exhibition that is opening at STEAM over the Easter holidays.
The holiday activities have been organised to complement the brand new ‘World’s Fastest’ exhibition, which explores the Great Western Railway’s race to become the fastest railway in the world.
The fun drop-in sessions at the Swindon Borough Council-owned museum include: Rapid Record Breakers (11 April, 11am – 3pm) and The Hare and the Tortoise Story Time (18 April, 11am – 3pm).
STEAM also has two new interactive games for the Easter break.
Race to the Ocean gives visitors an innovative way of travelling along the Great Western Railway routes, finding out about each station on their way. The game is installed in the museum’s Speed to the West area.
The second new game, Choose Your Own Adventure, explores life ‘inside’ Swindon Works and can be found in The Carriage Shop area.
Both new interactives include puzzles and challenges suitable for all ages.
Families will get a taste of what it was like to be an engine driver and a signalman as they get on board STEAM’s train simulator to ‘drive the train’ and step inside the GWR interactive Signal Box to ‘change the points’.
Tomorrow (6 April), will also provide an opportunity to ‘Meet the Railway Workers’, which takes place between 10am and 4pm. STEAM’s dedicated team of volunteers will welcome visitors aboard No. 6000 King George V, No. 3440 City of Truro and No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle. Children will receive a special GWR Certificate for changing the points in the Signal Box at this event.
All Easter activities and entrance to the ‘World’s Fastest’ exhibition are included in STEAM admission and free to STEAM season ticket holders.
STEAM is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm, with last admission at 4pm; and Sundays from 11am until 4pm with last admission at 3pm.
